A small number of trees are being removed for the turning circle and new

Main Avenue Restoration

The main avenue is one of the oldest features of the park. The avenue which runs in a straight line between Towneley Hall and the River Calder features on a 1735 plan of the area. The oldest trees are around 200 years old, although many of the trees date back 100 years when the council took over management of Towneley as a municipal park.

Unfortunately many of the trees now suffer from old age and die back. To ensure the continuity of the main avenue for generations to come, a programme of thinning, re-planting and drainage works will take place over the autumn and winter 2006.

A survey identified 36 trees that require removal and replacement, water-logging problems that need sorting out and gaps in the avenue that need replanting. Consultation over the felling has been held with the public during the summer 2006. The 34 felled trees will be replaced by the planting of 71 new oak and lime trees. All the work will be carried out by the Green Spaces and Amenities tree teams.
