Towneley Wildlife

The site consists of two ponds and a wildflower meadow with groups of trees to the southern and eastern edges . The larger man-made pond occupies the southwest of the site with the smaller pond hidden to the east behind tall ruderal herbs.
A stream originating at Cliviger Laithe feeds both ponds, having passed through a Small Holding on the Parks boundary. North east of the main pond lies a wild flower meadow bounded to the east by recently planted trees, comprising mainly of Oak.

The site is important as a breeding site for seven species of Dragonflies (Odonata);
  • Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum)
  • Brown Hawker (Aeschna grandis)
  • Common Hawker (Aeschna juncea)
  • Common Blue Damselfly (Enallagma cyanthigerum)
  • Azure Damselfly (Coenagrion puelia)
  • Large Red Damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula)
  • Blue tailed Damselfly (Ischnura elegans)

Breeding populations of

  • Common Frog, (Rana temporaria)
  • Common Toad, (Bufo bufo),
  • Smooth Newt, (Triturus vulgaris)
  • Palmate Newt. (Triturus helveticus)

also occur.
