Science and Geography at Towneley is hands on and practical,
involving investigation in the various habitats we have on our
doorstep.

Minibeast Safari
Meet the inhabitants of the dead wood community of Towneley Woods. Children get a chance to capture and identify the small animals living on a dead Oak in a safe environment, this session can be expanded to allow children to create their own keys.
Pond Dipping
Using the Deer Pond, Local Nature Reserve. An opportunity to capture and identify the small animals living in a pond. This session can be combined with a Minibeast Safari to allow comparison of two habitats.
River Surveys
Working safely in shallow water, children investigate the River Calder as it runs through the park. Investigations include measuring river velocity, mapping the river profile and assessing water quality by kick sampling inverebrates.
Habitat Studies
A chance to explore the woodland habitat learning about structure, cycles and ecology. Children are introduced to concepts like, decomposition, photosynthesis, and food chains.
Woodland Walks
Can be tailored to the needs of the group, allowing a chance to learn about the ecology of the woodlands in a more hands on style. Can include the Sculpture Trail
