Education at Towneley
History Education at Towneley
The service offers different packages linked to the curriculum. All are hands on, object based and emphasise the contrast between past and present, old and new.
The sessions take place in Towneley Hall and/or the Museum of Local History. We also offer a loan service to local schools. The school can borrow items relating to houses and homes.
Staff can also visit local schools with a range of objects relating to houses and homes, the Home Front and toys.
VictoriansWe take look in the kitchen in the Hall and we see some of the rooms in the Hall which were used at the time. In the local history museum there is a street scene as well as items used everyday by children and people.
TudorsA tour of the Hall, which also focuses on the Tudor period. Children will see the 1620s family dining room, priest hide, talk about the Towneley's and their Catholic faith and dress in ruffs and caps.
Houses and HomesA tour of the Hall which focuses on the 'Country house' and a visit to the Museum of Local History. Here, we look at and demonstrate the tin bath, cleaning carpets, washing, waking up - all in an age before electricity.
EgyptologyWe look at the Egyptian way of life and death with items from the collections. Children handle some of the collections and we have a look at our resident mummy.
Toys and gamesChildren's toys from the 19th and 20th Centuries including iron and wooden hoops, Noah's' Ark, dolls and a dolls house, scrapbook and a dolly tub.
Home FrontWe examine how Britain coped with the threat from Nazi Germany. We feature ARP (including the blackout) fire fighting, the Home Guard, identity cards, food and fundraising.
